Dixon Endures, Survives Massive Field to Claim Goblin 250 at Rockford

By Jordan Kuehne
LOVES PARK, Ill. (Sunday, October 25th, 2009) -- Scott Dixon should race more often, as the father of three regulars at the Rockford Speedway outlasted a massive field of 130 cars to collect the final event of the year at the historic facility, the Goblin 250 enduro. Dixon hadn't raced in six years before entering the event, seeking permission from his wife to get back on the track and in his return, the Wisconsin driver made it seem like he had never taken time off. Dixon assumed control with 25 laps remaining, passing Corey Marshall for the top spot, and held Marshall off for the victory. Carolyn Johnson won the Fair Demo Derbies while Greg Elser and Rick Dobbles also collected feature wins.

The best appearing car on the day, Tim Runge's ghoulish machine, led the 130 car field to the green in the Aaron's Sale & Lease Goblin 250. Runge quickly gave up the lead to Joe Rasmussen, who paced the field until lap 45. Steve Goll took control of the race after that, working past Rasumssen and around the vast array of cars.

Goll continued to lead when the first red flag of the race came on lap 115 after Keith Scott spun on the frontstretch and collected three other cars in the mayhem. The leader at the halfway break was still Goll as Matt Belknap gave chase in second.

After considerable attrition over the first portion of the race, around 50 cars returned to the high-banked quarter mile for the final 125 laps which was ran on the Monza course with the backstretch featuring a chicane.

The chicane didn't throw a kink in Goll's plans though, as he continued to lead the field over the next 45 laps. With 80 circuits remaining though, Corey Marshall mounted a charge and pushed past Goll to commandeer the lead and the race. Marshall was still out front with 50 laps to go as Tim Ludke tried to track him down.

With 219 laps in the book, the second red flag of the day brought the field to a halt with Marshall still out front. Marshall lost the lead in short order to Scott Dixon, as Dixon grabbed the top spot with 25 laps to go.

Dixon held on the over the final 25 circuits to collect the race win and claim the Goblin 250.

"The kids race down here regularly and they dared me to come down here and race," an exhausted Dixon stated in victory lane. "I have to thank my wife because she didn't want me to race but we'll have to see if we can do this again. It feels good to come out on top here and get the win."

Marshall, Ludke, Belknap and Jeff Myers rounded out the top five.

In the Darkhorse Painkiller Classic Fair Class feature, it was Greg Elser and his 1975 Chevy Impala surviving 32 other cars and numerous carnage to claim victory.

Rick Dobbles in his 1973 Chrysler New Yorker prevailed in a three car battle of attrition in the Darkhorse Frankenstein Class feature.

Carolyn Johnson outlasted 16 other cars to take home the crown in the Fair Class demolition derby.
